The Magaluf athletics track officially bears since yesterday the name of Calvià athlete Joan Munar Martínez, who competes in Paralympic events, making him a role model for the municipality's sport. At an official ceremony held at the facility itself, Calvià Town Hall recognized his outstanding sporting career and the values he represents both on and off the field.
The Mayor of Calvià, Juan Antonio Amengual, emphasized that the tribute transcends sporting achievements: "What makes Joan one of Calvià's most important role models are his values and his abilities." His name will not only be there to commemorate an exceptional athlete from the municipality, but also as a symbol that with effort, no barrier is insurmountable. Today, your town, with the same pride, puts your name on its map forever.”
The name change, unanimously approved by Calvià Town Hall's plenary, was made official at an event that brought together municipal authorities, family members, representatives of sports organizations, and residents of the municipality to recognize Munar's career as an athlete and his close connection to a facility where he has trained for years.
Visibly moved, Joan Munar Martínez expressed his gratitude for the recognition and recalled his connection to this track: “That the municipality had decided by consensus, after a large petition drive, to name the athletics track after me is a true dream and an honour. I have dedicated many years to this sport, training and competing at the facility. Due to the visual degradation, I have had to adapt and reinvent myself over time.” In the end, I think it went well. I won a bronze medal, the first ever for Calvià at the Paralympic Games. I hope this recognition serves as an example for many other young people, whether with or without disabilities.”
During the ceremony, the sign was unveiled, adding Joan Munar Martínez’s name to the Magaluf athletics track. This gesture by Calvià recognizes his sporting career, his connection to the facility, and the example he sets. The name change reflects his entire sporting and personal achievements, which include milestones such as the bronze medal he won in the long jump at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games.
