A large crowd gathered in Calvià to view the solar eclipse. The Santa Ponça beach and bay area recorded a peak attendance of approximately 8.000 people, making it the most crowded spot in the municipality. The few incidents attended to were due to heatstroke and dehydration, with none reported as particularly serious. Furthermore, traffic restrictions were fewer than anticipated.
An operation involving 60 local police officers, including the Drone Unit, was in place. Land and sea personnel from the Civil Protection volunteers were deployed, including two Lima boats with a skipper and lifeguard, on a day when numerous private vessels anchored off the coast without any incidents being reported at sea. Lifeguard service on Santa Ponça beach was also extended until 10:00 p.m.
The public company Calvià 2000 increased the number of portable containers in the expected large-influx areas and organised a cleanup operation to be carried out during and after the eclipse.
Early in the morning, Mayor Juan Antonio Amengual, via the Town Hall's social media channels, appealed for everyone to experience the eclipse respectfully so that "everything is as it was when it's over," while also reminding everyone of the importance of exercising caution at the viewing points. Information and signage panels have been installed at El Toro and Malgrats viewpoints, warning of the risk of rockfalls and landslides, and in the upper area of Santa Ponça where the repeaters are located.
The first traffic-related incident occurred at midday, when traffic was stopped between Plaza Santa Ponça and Lisboa St. At 4:30 p.m., car access to El Toro was restricted, allowing passage only to residents, workers, and public transport.
Several hotspots had been identified and maintained with a continuous police presence, without the need to restrict traffic.
Observation from the Puig de sa Morisca Archaeological Park
A restricted astronomical observation experience was held at Torre III viewpoint in the Puig de sa Morisca Archaeological Park. This location, chosen for its elevated position and privileged westward visibility, accommodated a group of people with confirmed reservations in a natural archaeological setting.
The activity, which took place between 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., featured strict safety measures, restricted access, and the mandatory use of certified safety glasses. Participants also received specific recommendations, such as wearing appropriate footwear for uneven terrain and using flashlights for the nighttime descent.
The organisers facilitated access to the archaeological site after a prior accreditation process, thus ensuring the protection of the heritage and the safety of the participants during this unique event.
