- The Puig de sa Morisca Archaeological Park will host a morning of free activities for children and families this Saturday, 16th May
The Puig de sa Morisca Archaeological Park will celebrate a family day on the occasion of International Museum Day 2026 this Saturday, May 16th, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The activity is free, requires no prior registration, and is especially aimed at families, schoolchildren, and parent-teacher associations (AMIPAs) in Calvià.
The day aims to bring archaeological heritage to young children through participatory, creative, and hands-on activities. During the morning, children will be able to discover different aspects of prehistory, archaeology, and history through play, creation, and exploration of the park as an educational and community space.
The activity is framed within the theme proposed by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) for International Museum Day 2026: “Museums uniting a divided world.” Based on this idea, Sa Morisca aims to highlight the role of museums and heritage sites as places for meeting, learning, and community. In a context marked by social fragmentation and unequal access to culture, heritage can become a tool for building connections between generations, communities, and diverse ways of understanding the world.
From this perspective, the family day out is not only conceived as a recreational activity but also as an invitation to share the park as a public, open, and welcoming space. Through play, archaeology, creativity, and participation, children and families can connect with the past, engage in dialogue with other perspectives, and discover that museums not only preserve objects and stories but also help build community.
Participants aged 3 to 12 will receive a Sa Morisca “passport” upon arrival. As they participate in the activities, they can fill it out. Those who complete it will receive a Sa Morisca badge and be entered into a drawing for five park t-shirts.
The programme will include different workshops and spaces: Balearic stone-slingers, to discover this figure from Balearic prehistory, learn to make a sling, and practice shooting; Prehistoric Paintings, where a collective mural will be created using natural pigments; Symbolic Play Area, with a recreation of a prehistoric house for the youngest children; Fantastic Animals, a medieval-inspired activity to create imaginary animals with the family; and ArqueoCSI, where participants will investigate skeletons and funerary offerings. Prehistoric fire, to learn about ancient ignition techniques; and Ceramic necklaces, where participants will create clay pieces decorated with motifs inspired by Balearic prehistory.
With this event, Sa Morisca reinforces its role as a meeting place between heritage, education and the local community. The proposal is part of the park's ongoing work to bring archaeology closer to diverse audiences and transform heritage into an accessible, active, and shared experience.

About the Puig de sa Morisca Archaeological Park
The Puig de sa Morisca Archaeological Park, promoted by Calvià Town Hall and the University of the Balearic Islands since 1997, covers more than 45 hectares and is home to one of the most important concentrations of archaeological sites in Mallorca, many of them publicly owned.
The main settlement dates from between the 9th and 2nd centuries BC. C. and has been key to understanding how products arriving on the shores of Santa Ponça from different parts of the Mediterranean were redistributed to the interior of the island. This archaeological wealth is complemented by a remarkable natural, ethnographic, and landscape heritage, visible along the more than eight kilometres of marked trails that crisscross the park.
The park is managed by a public foundation comprised of Calvià Town Hall, the Government of the Balearic Islands, the Council of Mallorca, and the University of the Balearic Islands. This management model aims to ensure efficient, stable, and coordinated administration of the park, facilitating the development of research, conservation, education, outreach, and community engagement projects.
