The first 21st-century tourist areas' urban redevelopment projects begin in Calvià.

  • The Hotel Teix site in Magaluf will be dedicated to public urban furnishing
  • The Hostal Colón in Peguera will make way for a 14-space public parking lot

Demolition work began this Friday on Hostal Colón in Peguera and Hotel Teix in Magaluf. These are the first urban redevelopment projects in Calvià in the 21st century. The Hostal Colón in Peguera will be converted into a 14-space public parking lot, one of which will be accessible and two equipped with electric vehicle charging points. The site of Hotel Teix in Magaluf will be used for new public facilities and services for residents.

The total investment for the purchase and demolition of both properties amounts to nearly 6 million euros. The acquisition and demolition of Hotel Teix alone totals almost 4.3 million euros. For the Colón, the cost is around 1.6 million euros. This investment has been made possible thanks to Next Generation EU funds, managed through the Government of the Balearic Islands.

The President of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Marga Prohens; the Mayor of Calvià, Juan Antonio Amengual; the Regional Minister of Tourism, Jaume Bauzá; and the Deputy Mayor for Tourism of Calvià, Elisa Monserrat—amongst other authorities—have officially launched the demolitions.

“These demolitions are not an end, they are the beginning of a more pleasant, livable, and sustainable future for our municipality. For tourists and, above all, for residents. With these demolitions, we are moving forward in the process of urban renewal and regeneration, recovering land for public use,” said Amengual.

The mayor thanked President Prohens for the institutional collaboration in managing economic resources and implementing the Responsible Tourism Law, concluding that: “Today, Calvià is once again the leading tourist destination in the Western Mediterranean. Together we are unstoppable.”

The demolitions of Colón and Teix buildings are part of a municipal infrastructure modernisation and improvement plan that the Mayor described as “historic,” with 43 million euros allocated this legislature for major projects such as the renovations of the Gabriel Escarrer Juliá Promenade in Magaluf, Jaume I Avenue in Santa Ponça, the Peguera boulevard, and the houses at the Galatzó Public Estate, amongst others.
