- The Regional Minister of Territory, Mobility and Infrastructure, Fernando Rubio, met today with the mayors Juan Antonio Amengual (Calvià) and Estefanía Gonzalvo (Andratx) to discuss the problem of mobility on the Ma1 that affects the two municipalities.
The mayor of Calvià, Juan Antonio Amengual, and the mayoress of Andratx, Estefanía Gonzalvo, held a fruitful meeting this Tuesday with the Regional Minister of Territory, Mobility and Infrastructure of the Consell de Mallorca, Fernando Rubio. At the meeting, several mobility-related issues of concern to the two municipalities in the Ponent region of Mallorca were discussed.
One of the issues addressed was the problem of the traffic jams that have been occurring for years on the Ma-1 motorway (Ponent), which connects Palma with Andratx, as it passes through Calvià. In this regard, Rubio committed to finding solutions with Amengual and Gonzalvo to improve traffic flow, which is particularly difficult between May and October.
Fernando Rubio explained them that the works on the Vía de Cintura highway will be completed in June. The road will have been reinforced along 8 kilometres and the number of lanes will be increased in some sections, which will improve traffic flow and also impact the Ma-1 motorway.
At the same time, Consell technicians are studying solutions to achieve greater flow in the short term. These are minor actions that include lane redistribution and horizontal and vertical signage, amongst others. In the longer term, the Consell is also working on a project consisting of a new direct link between the Andratx motorway and the Vía de Cintura, thus minimising traffic jams on the highway.
The mayor of Calvià and the mayoress of Andratx have also requested the Consell de Mallorca to carry out landscaping work on the roadsides and medians. The Consell de Mallorca has informed them that the landscaping improvement works are already planned.
Furthermore, both Amengual and Gonzalvo have requested the island councillor to design a plan to minimise disruption during the planned road reinforcement works on the MA-1 between Peguera and Port d'Andratx. Rubio has committed to promote this plan, which will involve carrying out all the work at night and after the summer. Furthermore, the civic road and road surface reinforcement project between Peguera and Camp de Mar is practically completed, and the works could be awarded before the end of the year.
Finally, the Consell de Mallorca and both municipalities are urging the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT)—which is responsible for road traffic management—to work together to address the traffic jams problem.
