The Magaluf - Joan Munar Martínez athletics track improves its facilities thanks to institutional collaboration.

  • Calvià Town Hall and Consell de Mallorca collaborate on an investment valued at almost 400.000 €
  • The improvements have focused on pavement changes, reinforcement of the fencing security and installation of a giant LED screen

The collaboration between Calvià Town Hall and Consell de Mallorca has enabled to carry out important improvement works at the Magaluf - Joan Munar Martínez athletics track. The result is that the facility now stands out as one of the best in its segment nationwide.

The project began with a call for subsidies to promote physical activity through aid for the creation of new sports facilities and the improvement of existing ones, issued by the Consell de Mallorca in August 2024. Calvià Town Hall submitted several projects to improve municipal sports facilities, highlighting the Magaluf - Joan Munar Martínez athletics track, which included the following improvements:

 1. Resurfacing of the indoor athletics module. Cost of the project: 104.501,30 €

 2. Replacement of the artificial turf surface perimetre. Cost of the project: 136.039,17 €

 3. Supply and installation of a giant outdoor LED screen. Cost of the project: 92.864,57 €

 4. Repair of the moat's protection fence. Cost of the project:  55.545,15 €

The total budgeted amount for all the requested actions was 800.880,54 €.

Calvià Town Hall assumed the amount of 407.663,64 €, while the subsidy granted by the Consell de Mallorca amounted to  393.216,90 €.

The actions were:

  • Remodeling of the Magaluf athletics track:  388.950,19 €
  • Replacement of LED spotlights in different football pitches (Pas de ses Llebres 11-a-side football pitch in Peguera, 7 and 11-a-side football pitches in Santa Ponça, 7-a-side football pitch in Son Caliu and Julián Ronda 11-a-side football pitch in Costa d’en Blanes):  208.695,37 €
  • Irrigation system for the Peguera football pitch:   60.500,00 €
  • Improvements to the Peguera swimming pool basin:  115.207,48 €
  • Salt electrolysis equipment in the Santa Ponça swimming pool:  27.527,50 €

Actions carried out on the Magaluf - Joan Munar Martínez athletics track:

Resurfacing of the covered athletics sports module

Once the surface installed in the initial work had reached the end of its useful life, the old synthetic surface was milled and a new synthetic surface was laid over an area of almost 900 square metres.

This action significantly improves the technical and safety performance of the covered module's straight, as the new surface has a high energy absorption coefficient in accordance with the requirements of the International Athletics Federation (IAAF). This makes the facility ideal for training under conditions similar to those of tracks used for national and international championships.

Replacement of the artificial turf perimetre surface

Once the surface installed in the initial work had reached the end of its useful life, the artificial turf surface that makes up the perimetre runway/running lane and the track's transition areas was removed and replaced. The newly installed surface is next-generation and does not contain SBR (tire decomposition) infill.

This new surface provides an ideal and effective lane for recovery after physical activity, as well as a warm-up or cool-down area, while also replacing a polluting infill with a sustainable alternative.

Surface area replaced:  3.211,72  square metres.

Supply and installation of a giant outdoor LED screen

The track now features a new communication element: a giant 18-square-metre (3x6 m) LED screen made up of 36 panels. This outdoor screen has a fixed structure for hanging over the track and also a truss that enables its dismantling and installation at any other desired location. This LED screen significantly contributes to the modernisation of the facility. Monitoring competitions, communication, and advertising are some of the uses this new infrastructure will have. The installation of the screen will allow for real-time monitoring of athletic competitions taking place at the facility, as well as the projection of messages related to the venue, the organisation, or the programmes held there. It is worth noting that its dimensions and location ensure its vision from  the entire track, especially from the stands.

Repair of the moat's protection fence

This project focuses on the cleaning, repair, and reinforcement of the protective railing located above the access moats to the basement level of the track. Amongst other actions, the following have been carried out:

• Treatment with anti-rust paint

• Replacement of the posts supporting the fence structure, with the insertion of a buttress on the outer face

The work carried out reinforces the safety of the enclosure in the areas with a difference in level between the track (surface level) and the access points to the changing room and fitness area.
