- The Consell de Mallorca has invested almost 1,3 million euros in this new infrastructure, which will be completed in about six months and extends the existing path between Andratx and Camp de Mar by one kilometre
The Mayor of Calvià, Juan Antonio Amengual, and the President of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, participated today in the groundbreaking ceremony for the long-awaited civic path that will connect Peguera and Camp de Mar. It is a continuation of another pedestrian path that currently connects Camp de Mar with Andratx and Port d'Andratx. This path will now be extended by one kilometre, running from the roundabout on Carrer Savina in Peguera to the roundabout on the road from Son Fortuny to Camp de Mar. The project costs the institution almost 1,3 million euros, and the contract was awarded to the company Amer e Hijos. The works will last approximately six months.
The visit was also attended by the mayoress of Andratx, Estefania Gonzalvo, and the councillor for Territory, Mobility, and Infrastructure, Fernando Rubio.
Once the works are completed, the route will be suitable for both pedestrians and cyclists, who will be able to travel safely between the two towns. The main objective of this road is to promote and encourage more sustainable mobility and provide alternatives to motorised transport. The project also includes resurfacing the road, as technicians believe the existing material has eroded and needs renewal.
This infrastructure is just one part of the Civic Roads Plan being promoted by the island council. President Galmés explained that "there are up to 26 projects of this type underway this legislature representing an investment of approximately 45 million euros. This new network, once completed, will add almost 60 kilometres of pedestrian and bicycle paths to our island. This path currently under construction will significantly improve connectivity for Calvià and Andratx residents, allowing them to travel and exercise safely and sustainably."
THE PROJECT
The path runs alongside the Ma-1A road and will consist of two 3-metre-wide sections. The first section starts at Camp de Mar, where the slow lanes of the road will be removed, and the path will be painted directly onto the asphalt. The second section, the remaining 500 metres to Peguera, will be built on the existing road sidewalk using the same materials as the completed path. Furthermore, along this half-kilometre stretch, steel and wood barriers are planned to separate pedestrians from traffic, and some areas with slopes will be reinforced with triple-twist wire mesh to prevent the risk of rock or soil falls. This project affects the municipalities of Calvià and Andratx and has been developed in coordination with their respective town councils, taking into account the specific needs of each municipality.
