Santa Ponça is preparing to experience one of the island's most anticipated celebrations: the rei En Jaume Festivities. From August 26 to September 6, the town will host a packed programme of activities combining culture, music, tradition, and sports. In this 2026 edition, residents of Calvià and visitors will commemorate the 797th anniversary of the historic landing of King James I troops.
The festival's main events will officially begin on Thursday, August 27, with the commemorative ceremony at the Santa Ponça Cross, which this year will feature the festivities' announcement by Carlos Fuentes, rector of several parishes in the municipality. The festive programme includes a variety of activities for the whole family, most notably the XXV Trobada de Gegants (25th Giants' Gathering) on Saturday, August 29th, and the 'Nit de Foc' (Night of Fire) on Tuesday, September 1st, when the Dimonis de Calvià (Devils of Calvià) will fill the streets of the coastal town with fire and light.
The highlight of the festivities, the historical reenactment, will take place during the first weekend of September. Following the colourful Moorish parade on Friday, September 4th, the landing of the Christian troops and the final battle on Santa Ponça beach will be reenacted on Saturday the 5th. These activities, which bring together hundreds of participants each year, symbolise the unity of the municipality of Calvià around its history, spectacularly reliving events that occurred almost eight centuries ago, in 1229.
In conjunction with the reenactments, the streets of Santa Ponça will host a traditional medieval market from Thursday, August 3rd, to Sunday, August 6th. Music will be another major attraction in Plaza de la Pinada, which will feature a diverse programme of evening events throughout the festivities.
The closing day, Sunday, September 6, will conclude the celebrations with a spectacular fireworks display at dusk over the waters of Santa Ponça Bay. The Mayor of Calvià, Juan Antonio Amengual, emphasised the importance of these festivities not only as a time for leisure but also as a way to strengthen the municipality's identity and traditions, and invited residents and tourists alike to enjoy these celebrations that unite the entire community.
