The foreign press to Calvià
“Memory of Calvià” Collection, 3
2016 DL: PM 1481-2016
The dynamism of the foreign press in Mallorca has been well reflected in Calvià. In fact, among the towns of the Island, it is one of those that has given the greatest number of publications of this type, and the third book of "Memoria" wants to leave oral and written testimony of that circumstance. After an introduction by Agustí Aguiló that frames and describes the phenomenon of the foreign press in Calvià, the central chapter of the book is dedicated to the most important magazines published in the municipality: Vora Mar, Veïnats, Entre tots, Maganova, L'Olla , La Veu i L'Estaló with added value: the text referring to each magazine is authored by its founders or promoters. These same people and some others narrate in the part dedicated to testimonies the experiences they had when carrying out the different publications.
The ancient offices of Calvià (1860-1960)
Brigida Gomila Juaneda
“Memory of Calvià” Collection, 4
2017 DL: PM 1518-2017
The fourth volume of the collection is dedicated to the trades typical of rural populations in the pre-tourist era, occupations that we could call "urban" or that are not specifically in the agricultural and livestock field. Brígida Gomila constructs the historical story based on two axes: one dedicated to the work of women and the other to that of men. First, she explains the trade and then relates the people and families who practiced it in Calvià and Es Capdellà. As far as women are concerned, it is worth highlighting the author's interest in treating their jobs and occupations—maids and maids, bakers, dressmakers, midwives...—and rescuing them from the oblivion or indifference to which they so often suffer. has relegated history. In the chapter on men's professions, for its part, we will find a multitude of jobs portrayed, which are presented to us classified by typology: administrative field (secretary, janitor, postman...), related to health and hygiene (doctor, barber), with education (teacher), with the sea (sailor, machinist, fisherman, lighthouse keeper), with stone (stonemason, plasterer, bricklayer)... and a long etcetera. Included in the book are testimonies from people from Calvià and Es Capdellà whose parents or grandparents worked as a town crier, shoemaker, pine cutter and blacksmith.
Els antics mitjans de transport a Calvià
Barbara Montoya Boix
“Memory of Calvià” Collection, 5
2020 DL: PM-40-2020
In this book, the young Calvian researcher Bàrbara Montoya Boix offers us a historical tour of transportation in Calvià. The study deals with each type of transport in chapters: public transport, from the first stagecoaches that went up to Calvià and the tram that reached Cas Catalán to the first passenger trucks called "es Correu"; private transportation, from traveling on foot and the use of cars and carriages to the arrival of bicycles, motorcycles and the first private cars; and, finally, the transportation of materials and merchandise. The text is full of anecdotes and stories collected from the people of Calvià and des Capdellà, and there is also an important work of collecting photographs related to the subject, many of which have never been published. The work, in short, as is obligatory in the "Memory" collection, records the families and people who were related to the world of transport in Calvià.
Medicine and health in Calvià in antic times:
metges, medecines and natural remeis
Alberto Lahoz Dominguez
“Memory of Calvià” Collection, 6
2022 DL: PM 00955-2022
The historical overview that Alberto Lahoz draws in this book about the world of medicine and health in Calvià dedicates, naturally, an important chapter to the plagues that affected Calvià with more or less intensity throughout history, as well as to the preventive health measures that the authorities of the time had to adopt. Also playing a prominent role are the doctors who practiced in Calvià and Capdellà and everything related to medicines, without leaving aside popular medicine and its natural remedies, as the first defense against illnesses and injuries. The historical part is completed with a section dedicated to deliveries and births done in the old way. As for the second part of the book, it is made up of several oral witnesses, among whom there is a doctor and three other people who personally knew the Calvià doctors, of whom they draw us the professional and human profile. It can be said that we are facing a contribution, from Calvià, to a subject, the medicine and health of our ancestors, at the moment quite unprecedented in the area of the Foreign Part of Mallorca.
