Nikolai Alexèievitx Ivanov is an annoyed and depressed man who can not find the sense to his life. He neither loves his wife nor his lover and doesn't even enjoy the company of his friends. The tedium, the tiredness, the hopelessness, the anguish can take Ivanov to the limit. Ivanov is the reflection of a decayed society which is ending. The end of an era. Perhaps the story repeats now and again and today we are all Ivanov.
