Arthur Kipps, a middle aged lawyer, rents a theatre and hires the services of a professional actor to help him to recreate an unreal event, phantasmagorical, which happened to him years ago with tragic results for him and his family. From the stage, completely in a mess, full of furniture, papers and other objects, Kipps starts to read his story. At the beginning he does it in an undecided, painful, embarrassed way; but, bit by bit, advised by the actor and with the help of the theatre's artifices, his confidence and his ability to act increases. Meanwhile, the actor plays the role of the young Kipps, when this one was sent by the office he works for in London to resolve the matters of a former client, the deceased Mrs. Drablow, who lived in an isolated house, surrounded by reservoirs, in which Kipps came across with La mujer de negro (The woman in black).
