The maid's storytale is a feminist dystopia. The protagonist, Defred, narrates in first person her experiences in the Republic of Gilead, a kind of theocracy based on the textual interpretation of the Old Testament. Life in Gilead is sinister. It is a repressive and puritanical society in which any attempt at dissent is punishable with death. All people living there are constantly watched by both, the Angels (the security forces) and the Eyes (spies), so terror is constant.
