Magaluf, more ecological and sustainable: low visual impact dunes, palm trees, resistant vegetation and water savings.

  • The first phase of the remodelling will be formally inaugurated on 22nd June
  • Environmental measures under European funds are met

The first phase of the remodelling of the Magaluf Seafront Promenade - Paseo Gabriel Escarrer Juliá - is entering the final stretch of the works, which will be formally inaugurated on 22nd June. The project financed with European funds has been adjusted to European requirements, creating a natural environment with low visual impact dunes, the planting of palm trees and drought-resistant flora, and a water collection and use system to reduce the use of drinking water.

The dunes have been delimited by planting reeds and other species. Their maximum height does not exceed 80 centimetres, which avoids visual impact. Thus, the landscape and the sea views are not obstructed from the promenade and the terraces of the front-line establishments. Forty-eight palm trees have been planted in small oases.

A rainwater collection system has been installed along the promenade, which is processed on-site in small treatment plants. The water obtained is used to irrigate the dune vegetation. The showers have foot baths supplied with salt water extracted from the beach's own water table. These measures aim to minimise to the maximum the consumption of drinking water from the regular network.

The works have been subsidised with a 4 million euro grant from the Next Generation EU Funds of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry and Tourism, and the Department of Tourism of the Balearic Government through Illes Balears Sostenibles. Thanks to the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS) funds, an additional 1 million euros has been provided.
