The identification and sterilisation campaign of domestic cats in Calvià promoted by the Town Hall and carried out jointly with all the veterinary clinics of the municipality and with the collaboration of the Official College of Veterinarians of the Balearic Islands from 15
th September to 15th December 2017 was well-received.

The final result of the campaign has ended with the identification of 187 cats and the sterilisation of 91 female cats and 83 male cats, which means a total of 174 castrated cats. 78% of the identified cats are distributed between the areas of Santa Ponça, Palmanova and Son Ferrer. The areas of Cas Català and Peguera are the areas with less reception, with 1.6% of the total in each area. Regarding the distribution of sterilisations, again the areas of Santa Ponça, Palmanova and Son Ferrer are the outstanding ones, encompassing 67.8% of the total castrated cats in the municipality.

The campaign was intended, on the one hand, to raise awareness on the importance of identifying and sterilising companion animals, to reduce abandonment and avoid health and behavioral problems, and on the other hand to comply with the new municipal ordinance on welfare and tenure of animals that live in the human environment, approved in March 2017, which requires the owners of cats that have access to public spaces to their identification and castration, as stipulated in article 3 of the ordinance.
