Works on waste pipes in Santa Ponēa

 Wednesday 7th February 2018

CALVIÀ 2000 RENEWS THE WASTEWATER CONDUCTIONS TO MINIMISE THE RISK OF SPILLING IN THE SANTA PONÇA BEACH

• The first phase will last until May.
• Current pipelines are fragile with high risk of wastewater leaks.

Calvià 2000 is renovating the main wastewater pipeline in Santa Ponça. These works, which began in November, have already reached Avinguda Rei Jaume I, Bartomeu Rosselló street and continue towards Gran Via Puig Major.

Currently, the two main pumping stations of Santa Ponça pump their flows directly to the Santa Ponça treatment plant through two fragile, independent pipelines, which have been in service for more than 30 years and which have suffered several serious breakdowns. The impossibility of using either one or the other pipelines, as well as their structural problems, have caused loss of service, ground collapses and environmental effects due to accidental spills, such as those that occurred in the summer of 2016 and that forced the beach closure in the month of August.

The replacement of the pipes and the interconnection between them will put an end to these problems, by installing new large diametre cast iron pipes that will replace the old fiber cement pipes.

In this sense, the president of Calvià 2000 and first deputy mayor of Calvià Town Hall, Andreu Serra, explains that "many of the investments we are making are little visible on the surface but fundamental to face an optimal tourist season and to ensure the service to our neighbours. That must be our main objective".

The works began with the channeling in the land near the treatment plant and currently continue at the junction of the Avinguda Rei Jaume I, near the roundabout that gives access to the Ma-1 highway (Exit 17), where have been occupied one of the the lanes and a landscaped area, which will be replaced as soon as the works finish.

The Via Bartomeu Rosselló Planas is also affected, where half of the road has been occupied and whose market has temporarily moved to Avinguda dels Horts. This phase will last, approximately, until the end of February.

In March, the works will continue towards Gran Via Puig Major, and will last until the month of May. The works at the Wastewater Pumping Station, that is next to the beach, will be carried out in the second phase (which will be carried out next winter).

The execution of the work is being carried out by sections, in order to minimise the occupation and cause the least interference to vehicles, neighbours and to the service. The councillor for the area of Santa Ponça, Nati Francés, has visited the works, and has expressed her special interest in the fact that the works of this first phase end before the hotels opening.
