Diagnosis of the Elderly People of Calvią

 Wednesday 14th February 2018

CALVIÀ, DESPITE NOT HAVING AN AGEING POPULATION TODAY, IN 30 YEARS THE MAJORITY OF ITS CITIZENSHIP WILL BE CONCENTRATED IN THE GROUP OF ELDERLY PEOPLE, FOLLOWING THE TENDENCY OF THE STATE

It is one of the conclusions of the Diagnosis and prognosis of the elderly of Calvià that will serve as the basis for the elaboration of an Action Plan

Nearly 70% of the population of Calvià is between 16 and 64 years old, which suggests a clear ageing of the population of the municipality which in the next 30 years will concentrate most of its population in the group of elderly people, thus forcing to propose new active ageing policies in the coming years. This is one of the conclusions that are gathered in the study Diagnosis and prognosis of the elderly in Calvià, and that will be the basis of the Action Plan for the elderly that the Town Hall plans to elaborate.

According to the study, the current photograph of the population indicates that Calvià, with an aging index of 87 in 2016, is amongst the municipalities with one of the lowest rates in the whole of Spain, and in relation to the whole of the State which is 116 (the ageing index is the quotient between the number of people over 64 and the number of young people under 16). Therefore, it is concluded that today the population of Calvià is not very old, but follows the growth trend of Spain. Thus, the number of elderly people in Calvià has gone from 7.75% in 1998, to 14.59% in 2016 and to 16.80% in January 2018.

Another significant data provided by the diagnosis is that from the age of 70 there is a feminisation of ageing in Calvià, illustrated, for instance, by the fact that 64 percent of the population over 85 are women, compared to 36 percent of men.

Regarding loneliness, which concerns both the elderly and the professionals who work with them, in 2016, 22.87% of the population aged 65 and over lived alone.

It is also interesting, given the configuration of the municipality, to observe that if the municipality has 18 population centres with a very irregular distribution, the ageing of the population by zones is also irregular. Thus, Santa Ponça and Palmanova are the most ageing areas in the three age groups (55-64, 65-84 and 85 and over), followed by Son Ferrer and Peguera.

Another remarkable fact is that the population aged 55 and over of Santa Ponça is very numerous, so most probably in the next few years it will continue to be the most ageing area in Calvià. The greatest number of people aged 85 and over of the municipality are in the areas of Costa d'en Blanes and Calvià village.

Action Plan for the elderly

The diagnosis and prognosis of the elderly people in Calvià is the base document for drafting the Action Plan for the elderly, which will allow the design of active ageing policies for the coming years, taking into account the change in the social, civic and political participation model, that will be given by the now young seniors -who will reach the stage of senior-, and who have a different profile: they are more trained people, they are more independent and they are more demanding with their rights and in the way of managing their personal autonomy.
