Santa Ponēa beach clean-up 'Let's Clean Up Europe'

THE 'LET'S CLEAN UP EUROPE' CAMPAIGN STARTED IN CALVIÀ WITH THE PARTICIPATION OF AROUND 200 VOLUNTEERS


More than 4,000 microplastics were collected from the sand on the beach of Santa Ponça last Sunday

 

The first beach cleaning action of this season took place last Sunday, on the beach of Santa Ponça, within the framework of the Let's Clean Up Europe campaign,which counted with the participation of around 180 volunteers, most of them from the ONDINE Association. 

On this first day a total of 67 kg of waste were removed, and it is to be highlighted the collection of 4,442 objects from a 50-m area, amongst them, for instance: 1,493 plastics between 2.5 and 50 cm, 1,450 plastics between 0.5 and 2.5 cm, 575 cigarette butts, 271 cotton swabs, 134 pieces of string or nets, 74 candy sticks, 72 bags, 57 straws, 45 taps, 23 pieces of clothes or shoes, 13 bottles and 4 toys, amongst others.

The Santa Ponça beach clean-up is the first of the actions within the Let's Clean Up Europe campaign that aims to raise awareness amongst citizens on the protection of the environment and the problems generated by abandoned waste.

     


The Calvià Town Hall, through the Natural and Urban Environment Service, organised this clean-up with the collaboration of the ONDINE Association, Calvià 2000, the Rotary Club Calvià Internacional, the Hotel Association of Santa Ponça and the Hotel Don Jaime.
