The V Edition of Urban Art arrives

 Monday 9th April 2018

THE V EDITION OF BETART BEGINS: THE URBAN ART LABORATORY OF CALVIÀ

'BetArt V, urban art laboratory of Calvià' is the fifth edition of the artistic interventions' biennial of Fundación Calvià 2004 and the Culture Department of the Calvià Town Hall (Mallorca), which this year will take place between 9
th and 23rd April 2018.

On this occasion, the works will be carried out in the areas of Cas Català, Illetes, Bendinat, Portals and Costa d'en Blanes creating a new route that will add to the 3 tour routes of the project that already exist: one in the Galatzó residential estate and Santa Ponça, another that passes through Palmanova, Son Caliu and Magaluf; and a third one in Peguera.

The project began in 2012 and has 5 main objectives: make interventions that interact and dialogue with the citizen, create synergies between artists and entities, encourage the participation of local creators, and value the municipality embellishing public spaces and creating new tourist attractions.

Local, national and international artists.

The five creators that will meet in this event come from different parts of the country, some of them being in the international circuit. In alphabetical order: Aïda Gómez (Berlin-Madrid), Ampparito (Madrid), Javier Garló (Mallorca), María Martín (Segovia-Mallorca) and Mario Mankey (Valencia-Berlin). The first two are part of the proposal curated by Darío Cobacho, who will coordinate the exhibition together with the Culture team of the Ajuntament and Fundación Calvià 2004.

In total, it is planned to carry out between 6 and 8 works in municipal spaces or assigned by individuals and companies (electricity towers of Endesa, a tennis court, various walls and even some stairs).

'The game' will be the key concept in this year's exhibition.

One of the aspects that characterise BetArt is the diversity of styles and techniques in the artistic proposals as well as the freedom in the theme of the works. This is because the ultimate goal is to bring art closer to the citizen in their everyday environment: the public way; turning the city into a living art exhibition.

In the words of the researcher Óscar Olea (Mexico 1930) «taking art to the street is a way of returning the creative capacity to the common man», in short: presenting it as a cultural manifestation of its own and for the enjoyment of the whole of humanity and not only for a select group. Under this perspective, urban art becomes an engine for urban regeneration, the socialisation of culture and the enhancement of our identity.

This year the curator tries to question the preconceived idea about urban art by pointing out that the interest of these creations lies not only in the image understood as a decorative and contemplative element, but also beyond the clichés and the usual imaginary of graffiti and illustration, there are works that actively involve the viewer (virtually solving the work or participating in it), where the work acts as a node that unites different social actors, stories and experiences, moving away from the production of monumental objects that have no connection with space where they are located.

It is for this reason that 'the game' will be the discursive link of this year's works, a way of invoking a relational city where poetry and subversion manifest as the last form of -symbolic- liberation of the individual. The game can be the learning through leisure, but also an expression of our human condition and the ability to laugh at ourselves.
