Calvià 2000 completes the first part of the renovation of the wastewater pipes to minimise the risk of spills on the beach of Santa Ponça
Calvià 2000 has completed the first part of the renovation of the main wastewater pipeline in Santa Ponça. These works, which began in November last year, have gone through the Avinguda Rei Jaume I, Bartomeu Rosselló Street and the Gran Via Puig Major.
Before the work, the two main pumping stations of Santa Ponça boosted their flows directly to the Santa Ponça wastewater treatment plant through two fragile, independent pipelines, which had been in service for more than 30 years and that had suffered several serious breakdowns. The impossibility of using channelings indistinctly, as well as its structural problems, had caused loss of service, ground collapses and environmental effects due to accidental spills, such as those that occurred in the summer of 2016 forcing the beach closure in the middle of August.
With the work of replacing the pipes and the interconnection between them, these problems have been put to an end by the installation of new large diametre cast iron pipes that replace the old fiber cement pipes.
The works began with the channeling in the lands next to the treatment plant and have ended at the Gran Via Puig Major. The work will continue at the end of the tourist season, until reaching the wastewater pumping station that is next to the beach.
The work has been carried out by sections, in order to minimise the occupation and cause the least interference to vehicles, neighbours and service.
The total investment in Santa Ponça will be around 1.8 million euros. Phases 1 and 2 have cost 740,391 euros, and phase 3, which is currently in tender, will involve the renovation of the pipes until reaching the wastewater treatment plant in Santa Ponça, and its budget is 1,006,500 euros.
