INFORMATIVE NOTE FROM THE LOCAL POLICE OF CALVIÀ

STREET PEDDLERS ARRESTED FOR DRUG DEALING IN CALVIÀ

Thanks to the coordination with the Civil Guard, 48 men engaged in drug dealing have been arrested

The Local Police of Calvià together with the Civil Guard that operates in the municipality have arrested 48 men for alleged crime against public health in June and July. The complaints about street peddling have shown that on many occasions sellers do not only sell glasses, clothes, or souvenirs, but also some type of drug, usually marijuana, synthetic drugs or cocaine.

On the other hand, the application of the Coexistence Promotion bylaw during July has resulted in the filing of a total of 936 complaints. Apart from the 582 fines for peddling, 78 fines for unauthorised massage activities, 64 for bottle parties, 40 for drug consumption or possession, 27 for urinating in public spaces, 9 for having sex in public places, 5 for being naked or half-naked, and 4 for balconing, amongst others.

Compared to the same period of 2017, the decrease in 88 fines in the monthly general calculation is worth highlighting. Although the fines related to massages without authorisation increase, the number of administrative fines for street vending and for drug consumption or possession has decreased.

Fines for balconing

In the summer campaign, the Local Police of Calvià, in compliance with the Coexistence Promotion bylaw, has already fined six tourists for balconing or similar behaviour, that is when people jump or try to jump from a high place in a voluntary and reckless manner. The amount of the penalty for this behaviour is 600 €. According to municipal regulations, it is a serious offence and those responsible are the people who carry it out, as well as those who encourage these behaviours, without this responsibility being extended to the person who owns the establishment or who runs it.

The last case was yesterday, after 5.30 a.m. when in Torrenova (Magaluf) a young 21 year-old Irishman fell from 4 metres. It seems that he fractured a knee and was taken to the Son Espases hospital. The other cases that were fined were one in Santa Ponça - thanks to the verification through a hotel video - and another one in Magaluf that fell last Friday. In total, the number of fines this year are six, one in June, three in July and two so far in August. Throughout 2017, three fines for balconing were filed.
