CALVIÀ'S COAST, NAVIGATION, SMUGGLING AND FISHING IN THE NEW ISSUE OF THE ENTORN MAGAZINE DEDICATED TO THE SEA

The publication also analyses the defence and urbanisation of the coast

A new issue of the monographic magazine Entorn de Calvià, dedicated especially to The sea and edited by the Calvià Town Hall, has been presented at Portals Nous this morning. During the ceremony, the Mayor of the municipality, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, stressed that the magazine meets the objectives of disseminating with historical rigour information on the municipality of Calvià with special emphasis on collecting the most significant data of the social and cultural activity of the village of Calvià. In addition, he has highlighted that it is a public service publication, which reviews the past, the present and offers a strategic vision of the future of the municipality. Rodríguez Badal closed his speech remembering the song by Joan Manuel Serrat Plany al mar.

Next, the archeology professor of the UIB, Manuel Calvo, presented a brief dissertation on the importance of the sea for the inhabitants of Calvià and his connection with the history of the municipality and the island through the different archaeological discoveries on the Calvià coast.

Issue number 8 of the Entorn magazine includes in its content original investigation articles that review aspects such as the marine navigation during prehistory, the watch towers, smuggling in Calvià, fishing and the Calvià marine reserves, or the consolidation of a settled society on the coast. It also offers interviews with significant people who have to do with the municipality and the sea, such as the marine biologist Isabel Moreno; the activist Xavier Pastor; the mestre d'aixa, Joan Mario Rebassa; or the athlete Laura Quetglas, who is currently competing in the paddle surf world championship in China.

Other topics are also addressed, such as the coast quarries, the maps of Vicente Tofiño, the new place names of the Calvià coast, or the use of our beaches as a film set. Two new sections are also included: one on essay and another on young researchers from Calvià.

The magazine Entorn, which is published since 2013, dedicates each issue to a specific topic and is written by civil servants of the Town Hall. In addition, it has external collaborations of specialists in each field. Thus, previous editions have been focused on the environment, art, territory architecture, gastronomy, cinema, tourism and women.

At the end of the presentation, a short concert was offered by Antonia Rubio, who has interpreted an updated version of the popular 'jota marinera' with arrangements by the musician Josep Oliver.
