The Calvià Tourism Forum met today at the Sala Palmanova to analyse how the municipality will work on the 2021 season. The mayor of Calvià, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, chaired the meeting, which was also attended by the president of the Consell de Mallorca, Catalina Cladera.

In his welcoming remarks, the mayor of Calvià highlighted the joint work carried out with the rest of public administrations, such as the Consell Insular, with which, coordinated measures are being taken to face the situation created by the pandemic and face recovery. Specifically, he pointed out that the Consell Insular is developing important policies both for tourism promotion and in the management of current aid to the hotel sector since December, as well as those of a social nature that have allowed an increase in transfers to councils for social emergency aid.

The president of the Consell de Mallorca, Catalina Cladera, then addressed the members of the Forum. "Mallorca has not lost its attractiveness as a tourist destination and this is showed by the arrival of the first tourists when travelling has been possible" said the president. «The reactivation of tourist activity must be slow and progressive, adopting at all times the measures required by the health situation in order to control the virus to ensure a safe summer season, as stable and solvent as possible. A fourth wave at the beginning of summer would be a very strong blow ", she concluded.

Cladera also highlighted that "the commitment to a sustainable, intelligent and safe model has no turning back" and in this sense she explained that "European funds are an opportunity to move towards this model, which provides added value to our economic engine. The president also stated that in this commitment to quality, it is necessary to reinforce governance processes with the entire tourism value chain and public-private collaboration, taking the Calvià Tourism Forum as an example.

Municipal aid for the productive sector of Calvià

The mayor of Calvià explained the municipal aid that in 2020 was set out in the Municipal Plan for the social, economic and environmental recovery of Calvià, in consensus with all the political groups and all the productive sectors of the municipality. Now, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal explained, they are also working with the productive sector for the support measures that the Town Hall wants to implement for the sector.

In this sense, he announced new support measures for this year such as: the postponement of the payment of 50% of the IBI; the 100% bonus on the terrace occupancy rate for restaurants, at least until 30th June, and the commitment to recalculate the waste collection rate based on this year's activity level.

Measures that are added to direct aid for the productive sector for a total of 3.000.000 euros, of which 2.022.000 are provided by the Town Hall and the rest (489.243 euros each) will be provided by the Government of the Balearic Islands and the Consell de Mallorca. Direct aid, with a fixed amount of 3.000 euros per work centre or establishment, with an easing of the requirements and a facilitation of the procedures, to which only a responsible statement must be provided.

Analysis, forecasts and actions

Insular Minister Andreu Serra presented the promotional actions that are being developed by the Mallorca Tourism Foundation, such as the marketing and advertising strategy (a part in collaboration with the private sector through co-marketing), the communication agencies in origin, the empowerment of promotional social networks or actions to consolidate the island as a film tourism destination through the Mallorca Film Commission. In all this, the three fundamental guidelines to promote the island are reflected: security, sustainability and tourist intelligence.

On his behalf, Calvià Town Hall's general director for Tourism, Xavier Pascuet, explained that this year the Town Hall has increased by 50% the amount allocated to tourism promotion and that an action already launched of public relations in source markets will be consolidated, with the novelty of the introduction of the Spanish market, which wants to be recovered for the municipality. He has set safety as a key and distinctive feature for the destination, and announced that 1st May continues to be the opening date of beaches with all services in operation, without prejudice to the fact that there are concessionaires who decide to gradually open beforehand.
