Posidonia has prevented sand loss on beaches

Monday 29th March 2021

Calvià has started, for the second consecutive year, the removal of posidonia from the beaches that will be taken to a plot for its subsequent return to the coast

The objective of this action is to protect the beaches from winter storms

It has been possible to verify the recovery of sand along the sea line

Calvià 2000 has been carrying out, since 15th March, the removal of posidonia sea-grass remains that, as it was carried out for the first time in 2020, will be taken to a plot located near the Galatzó residential area to be returned later to the beaches, once the season is over. In March 2020, a total of 3.795.000 kilos of posidonia remains were removed, which, for the first time, were stored on the plot, to be later returned, between November and December, to the beaches.

Now, again, the operation to remove the posidonia remains is carried out for the summer season, after verifying the effectiveness of these measures that have allowed an effective protection of the coast, and seeing that the sand is recovered, as it can be seen in photographs 1 and 2 of Portals Vells beach.

With these actions, seaweeds (accumulations of posidonia that are deposited on the sand) are created to help protect and avoid the erosion of the beaches due to the waves and storms during the season that goes from November to March, taking advantage of the natural resource of the dead leaves of posidonia.
