CALVIÀ TOWN HALL INCREASES EFFORTS TO MOVE FORWARD IN THE RESPONSE TO THE CLIMATE CRISIS
The councillor for Environment, Rafel Sedano, participates in the Mayors Covenant State Meeting, today, in Valencia
Within the framework of the Mayors Covenant Meeting, held today in Valencia, with the presence of municipalities from all over the State, the symbolic signing of commitments of the municipalities and, specifically, of Calvià Town Hall has been carried out, being Calvià Town Hall, the first municipality in the Islands to sign the new commitment of the Mayors Covenant to once again recognise our collective responsibility in responding to the climate crisis.
With the signing of the renewed Commitments, we accelerate the fight against the climate emergency in the municipality and expand the objectives already set previously in accordance with the evidence that shows the need to increase the measures and timeframes in the face of the climate emergency.
Rafel Sedano, Calvià Town Hall's councillor for Environment and Ecological Transition, has expressed the importance of assuming the responsibilities that correspond to the administration and the challenges of working so that citizens involve in the process, "the many challenges require a strong political response at all government levels and at the Mayors Covenant - Europe is, above all, a movement of committed municipalities that share local solutions and inspire each other to make their vision come true "and has concluded" Calvià today takes the steps to guarantee the well-being of present and future generations. Calvià Town Hall is the first of the Islands and one of the only three in the Spanish State that has achieved the Calculo + Reduzco seal, referring to the 2016-2019 period from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge.
This voluntary Registry includes the efforts of administrations and other organisations in calculating, reducing and compensating greenhouse gas emissions generated by their activity.
The carbon footprint is an environmental indicator that is defined as the sum of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions emitted by direct or indirect effect of an individual, organisation, event or product.
This indicator allows municipalities, understood as an organisation, to know their GHG emissions, their origin and identify the critical points in order to establish an adequate emission reduction plan, or improvement plan.
Of the 25 town halls that have participated in recent years in registering data to obtain the MITRECO 'Calculo - Reduzco y Compenso' seal, only Calvià Town Hall, together with Zaragoza and Soto del Real, have achieved the CALCULO + REDUZCO seal for the 2016-19 period.
The Calvià Town Hall's Department of Environment and Ecological Transition is working to progress in the calculation, reduction and compensation of greenhouse gas emissions.
Awareness campaign at Es Capdellà Fair
Calvià Town Hall's Environment and Ecological Transition Service begins an awareness campaign at Es Capdellà Fair aimed at disseminating good practices on the consumption of natural resources and aimed at improving energy efficiency in homes in the municipality.
The aim of this campaign is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Calvià homes by promoting: self-control of domestic water and energy consumption, the introduction of saving measures and behaviours, the explanation of energy bills: schedules, powers, rates, saving modes (reducing consumption), the use of more sustainable materials, etc.
Thus, and with this objective, in addition to having a stand at Es Capdellà Autumn Fair, several training and information sessions will be held (the days are yet to be specified) where a free and personalised advisory service on optimising energy consumption (by prior appointment and on the last electricity bill) will be carried out, and where participants will be given an environmental education guide and a kit (information banners, shower timer, faucet aerators, etc.), to facilitate the achievement of the main objective of reducing emissions and mitigating climate change.
