Calvią signs the adhesion to the VIOPET Project

Monday 12th September 2022

CALVIÀ, FIRST TOWN HALL IN THE BALEARIC ISLANDS TO SIGN THE ADHESION TO THE VIOPET PROJECT OF THE MINISTRY OF SOCIAL RIGHTS AND AGENDA 2030

It is a temporary shelter programme for pets of women victims of gender violence

Today, Calvià Town Hall has signed a collaboration agreement with the Ministry of Social Rights and Agenda 2030 to join the VIOPET Project to assist victims of sexist violence with pets.

Both, the deputy mayor for Youth, Participation, Environment, Ecological Transition and Democratic Memory, Marga Plomer, and the general director of Animal Rights of the Government of Spain, Sergio García Torres, have signed the agreement. The event was attended by the councillor for the Environment, Ecological Transition and Democratic Memory, Rafel Sedano, and the deputy mayor for Social Cohesion and Equality, Nati Francés.

VIOPET is a programme that temporarily shelters the animals of women victims of sexist violence, in case the victim does not have a safe place for her pet. In 2012, a study was published which found that 59% of women victims of sexist violence postponed the decision to leave home for fear of abandoning their animals.

The main objective of the project is to act in a collaborative way with the services that manage cases of sexist violence where victims who live with animals are detected. The protocol is activated in the event that the victim cannot have the animal in a safe place, then a shelter is found for it.
