INFORMATIVE NOTE FROM THE LOCAL POLICE OF CALVIÀ

A TRAFFIC VAN WILL BE USED TO PREPARE POLICE REPORTS AND COLLECT COMPLAINTS FROM CITIZENS AND TOURISTS

This type of vehicle is technologically equipped to carry out alcohol and drug tests in an environment that respects privacy

The Calvià Local Police has a new van for police reports and at the same time to uses as a complaints office equipped with Internet connection and internal networks, as well as a computer, printer, precision breathalyser, and other security material. The equipment will be used for the investigation of road accidents, vehicle documentation controls, for writing reports and field work, as well as for carrying out alcohol and drug tests in an environment that respects the privacy of the driver. The van allows the Local Police to park the vehicle on public roads and carry out traffic controls, as well as act on the spot in serious accidents that take place on urban roads. The vehicle serves to expedite the police statements service, both for police officers and for citizens.

Another aspect to highlight is that the new van will function as a complaints office at specific times in the busiest places in the municipality of Calvià, which can be especially useful for people with reduced mobility or without Internet access. All the processing will be done online, despite the fact that the complainant will have a paper copy of the complaint filed. For this procedure, forms are also offered in English. Most of the complaints filed with the Local Police are related to noise complaints, non-compliance with the Coexistence Promotion Ordinance or occupation of public roads.

The price of the fully adapted Ford Transit van is around 70.000 €, of which half are for conditioning and specific equipment to carry out traffic reports. For instance, the vehicle has 12v and 220v plugs to connect computer devices, transmitters or breathalysers. The new van is microhybrid diesel. Of the Local Police vehicle fleet, thirty of the 35 vehicles in operation are hybrid.

Currently, the Calvià Local Police Report Unit has a staff of fifteen police officers. During the incipient summer campaign, the police force will intensify the breathalyser controls in the areas of Palmanova, Santa Ponça and Magaluf. It must be recalled that half of the people killed in traffic accidents in Spain test positive for alcohol, drugs, or both.
